This weeks Spelling Tasks include…
– Breaking the words into syllables
– Naming is the word a noun, verb or and adjective
– finding rhyming words
– colouring consonants and vowels (consonants – blue, vowels – red)
Last Friday the SLC hosted a fabulous MARKET DAY which was the culmination of many weeks of work. The children started out looking at advertising and the language used to sell a product. With the goal of creating, making and selling a product the children created advertisements for their chosen product, created flyers, developed shopping lists of what was needed to create their product. Comparisons of the cost of supplies were made, children researched the cheapest item and worked out the cost to set develop their product and its estimated turnover.
The MARKET DAY was an opportunity to use real life mathematics, problem solving, written language, oral language, creativity and imagination. It has been a unit of work that has been challenging but hugely rewarding for all the children. Children had to work in a team, listen to the opinions and ideas of others and the result on the day was impressive ! The happiness and excitement of all of the children on MARKET DAY was palpable and many many parents and grandparents commented on the rich learning experience the unit had provided.
Not Only did the students have a rich learning experience, they also managed to raise over $2,000 in profits for charity.
As the students discussed in last weeks blog post we have been looking at advertising through the eye of product placement. This has fitted in well with our marketing as part of creating our stalls this term.
Students remarked last week about what they thought product placement was. Here are some of the tasks students have completed focusing on product placement.

– Dictionary Meanings – with the 10 highlighted words.

If you don’t know already, the Senior School are having a Market Day as part of the Inquiry Learning unit.
This stall asks them to design and produce a product they will be selling on the 20th of November. This is also the reason why we will have an excursion to Fountain Gate next week to purchase the products they will need to do this.
This unit had provided many rich learning experiences for the students including…
– Analyzing print advertisements
– Exploring the features of TV ads.
– Using online resources to find information
– Looking at the features of formal letter writing.
– Analyzing the features of logos
– Exploring how product placement is used when promoting products.
– Looking at budgeting and how to spend the money effectively.
As part of each groups learning, they have been required to create some TV ads for their product. Here are some samples of the work students completed.
As part of the religion unit the Grade 5 boys are completing ‘The History of the Church’ in Australia, the Grade 5 boys took the opportunity to design and present the Senior School Mass this morning.

The Commissioning of the Disciples
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.
And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Christian and Ben were able to put these thoughts together into creating a freeze that reflected on how to live out Gospel. They wrote and directed the following performance.
Jay, Bailey and Finbar were also able to work together as well to be able to the following presentation as a part of the After Communion Reflection using images they look within the school.
All in all, the Grade 5 boys should be congratulated on a great job.
Yesterday (Thursday 17th September) we had our Senior Learning Expo exploring Famous Australian people and the effect they had on shaping the country.
